Leuchars St Athernase Church @ The Balmullo Gala Day 2015

Leuchars St Athernase Church participated in The Balmullo Gala yesterday.
Despite weather forecasters predicting 'rain', our volunteers set up the Flight Simulator and scores of youngsters enjoyed the thrill of flying an aircraft for the first time.

The Raffle Tickets sold really well this year and after contributing to the Balmullo Gala Day Fund, our efforts raised a total of £301 for our church.
This years lucky raffle ticket winners can look forward to a local flight from Leuchars Airbase, aboard a real aircraft.

On the day it was a great joint effort by Gwyneth, Alison, Dawn, Andrew, Stewart, Duncan, Joan and David Wilson.
Sound's Good!
With sincere thanks to St. Andrews Community Trust and RAF Leuchars for their assistance, Leuchars St Athernase Church now benefits from operating a high quality audio system. Image below, Locum Minister Duncan Barwise accepting delivery of the new equipment.
"We'll make some innovative use of the system soonest and show off its capabilities. It's going to make a huge difference. Thanks to everyone who made this possible". Duncan Barwise

Members of Leuchars St Athernase Church enjoyed Broughty Ferry Amateur Operatic Society’s Christmas Musical Evening in Invergowrie Church on the 18th December 2013.
"Thank you for a most enjoyable evening at the Invergowrie Carol Concert yesterday evening.
I was thoroughly entertained with the quality of the performance (very professional) and also with the
large supporting audience.
The church itself provided an impressive setting for such a performance, especially as a refuge from the wintry weather outside. One was immediately struck by how warm it was inside - the reason was soon quite obvious. All the pews were fully cushioned and I later found that the heating pipes were actually attached to the underside of the pews themselves. The effect - heavenly." Johnstone King

Leuchars St Athernase 2013 Events
On Saturday 8th June Leuchars St Athernase attended the Balmullo Gala Day and our volunteers (see photo below) enjoyed setting up our new lightweight gazebos and taking part in a really enjoyable gala day. One was used to display information about the Refurbishment of Leuchars St Athernase and Caroline was on hand to chat to visitors about the refurbishment project.
The second gazebo housed our very popular Flight Simulator and a large number of budding pilots (aged from 5 years to 85 years...) really enjoyed taking off and landing at RAF Leuchars.
Our very popular raffle prize - 'A Flight from RAF Leuchars' was won by Ms. Kellock. All proceeds to church funds, registered charity no. SC015677

On Sunday 9th June we celebrated the 1450th anniversary of the arrival of St Columba on the island of Iona. It is also the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Iona Community by George MacLeod and 25 years since the opening of the MacLeod Centre, which accommodates 50 pilgrims in a modern building close to the Abbey.
Earlier, on Sunday 2nd June we held a BIG LUNCH after our Sunday Service.
Company, food and weather all excellent.

Bertie enjoyed his lunch too!
Work in the church
It has been eradicated. However, work on a much larger scale was deemed advisable by the contractors and the nave has been cleared of pews and the pulpit and font boarded up. The apse was unaffected by the woodworm and (sadly but necessarily) has become a storage area which is functional but not attractive.
Although it has been an emotional experience for some to see our beloved sanctuary in such a state, it has also been the catalyst for some imaginative thinking with regard to making it more comfortable. A joint Session and Board meeting was held on 15th May, when those present discussed possibilities for the future look of our church – it was even suggested that we would be providing a sanctuary for the 22nd century!
One suggestion which received fairly universal support was that we should make the balcony fit for purpose. The architect who conducted a site visit on 2nd May has recommended the removal of the outside stair, as it is allowing water to soak into the north wall (the wall can be seen to be wet on the inside, now that the wooden panelling has been removed). An interior stair could be built, thus creating a closer link between the balcony and ground floor.
No decisions will be made until after the Board meeting (on 29th May) with members of the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland, at which architects who advise the Trustees will also be present. The Trustees will also be able to advise on grant funding and the complexities involved in undertaking a substantial piece of refurbishment.
If you’d like more detailed information, or you have any ideas, please speak to Caroline or any member of the Board (which includes all elders).
DOORS OPEN DAY on Sunday 8th September was a great success.
